Huoshiling Fm base reconstruction

Huoshiling Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Early Cretaceous, (19) K1hsl

Province:
Jilin

Type Locality and Naming

The Huoshiling Formation was erected by Yang Xuelin in 1973. The reference section is in Yingcheng of the Jiutai City of Jilin (borehole No.226 and No.50) (125°54´00", 44°9´00").

Lithology and Thickness

Songliao Basin. The Huoshiling Formation is mainly represented by gray green andesite, tuff and tuffaceous conglomerate with small amounts of siltstone, sandstone, argillite and coal streaks. It is 426.6 m thick. In Shibeiling, it is made up of greatly thick andesite with a thickness of more than 1000 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanics

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its base marked by purple red andesite basalt is distinguished from the underlying Triassic Permian strata and lies unconformably on the latter.

Upper contact

Its top marked by andesite separated from tuffaceous sandstone of the overlying Shahezi Fm and lies conformably under the latter.

Regional extent

The Huoshiling Formation is of volcanic rock series and is mainly distributed in Jiutai-Yingcheng and Shibeiling and Dalingzishan of Changchun. It has been correlated with the Didao Formation of JBM basins based on facies similarities.

Fossils

The Huoshiling Formation yielding plant fossils Coniopeteris burejensis, C. hymenophyllum, C. nympharum, Cladophlebis sp., Baiera furcata, Ginkgo orientalis, Elatocladus manchurica, Pityyophyllum lindstroemi. The formation yields plant megafossils and microfossils.

Age

"The radiometric datings for the formation range from 133 to 129 Ma (Pei et al., 2008) to 125 Ma (Huang et al., 2011) that corresponding to Hauterivian to the beginning of Aptian. The spore-pollen assemblage can be correlated with those of the Yixian Fm of Western Liaoning, the Tuntianying Fm of the Yanji Basin, and probably with the Longjiang Fm of the Hailaer Basin (Cui et al., 1990). As the Didao Fm, Yixian Fm, Tuntianying Fm, and Longjiang Fm have been confirmed as mainly Barremian, the Huoshiling Formation is considered here to be roughly coeval that is not in contradiction with radiometric data."
